English language pre-sessional courses in the University Language Centre (ULC), summer 2019

 

Our University Language Centre (ULC) is experiencing unprecedented increases in confirmed bookings for pre-sessional English programmes in this cycle compared with previous years, which we understand to be widespread within the UK sector. (A testimony to your hard work in supporting us to recruit!) This applies both to our 10 week pre-sessional (the deadline for which is 17th May) and the 6 week pre-sessional courses (deadline 7th June).

 

We are very conscious that this situation is likely to have the most potential impact on candidates from China. We are keen to support our PGT intake for 2019, and are doing our best to work with our key academic departments to manage the situation. However, ULC will need to operate a wait-listing system for any new 6 week pre-sessional applications received, in order to more closely manage available capacity against heightened demand.

 

Any new pre-sessional applications submitted after 17thMay will be placed on a waiting list and will receive the attached advice. One option may be to counsel students to consider booking tests in country as an alternative way of meeting English language requirements as we understand there is currently good availability of secure English language tests accepted by the University (including IELTS, TOEFL and Pearson).

 

We would really appreciate your comments on this matter, as we will be reviewing how to better manage our provision going forward.
